SDPD officer recovering from gunshot, suspect dead

KEARNY MESA (CNS/CBS8) - San Diego police officer Heather Seddon was shot in her upper chest at a Kearny Mesa interchange Sunday morning, and rushed by a fellow officer to nearby Sharp Memorial Hospital.

The suspect identified as Dennis Richard Fiel, 34, was shot dead, and police later learned his car might be linked to a series of shootings aimed at buildings in that area, including the Kearny Mesa headquarters of the San Diego Gas & Electric Company.

"Right now she is in good spirits, she sustained one injury, one gunshot wound," San Diego police Chief Shelley Zimmerman said during a briefing at Sharp Memorial, two hours after the shootings. Chief Zimmerman visited Officer Seddon again on Monday night, along with other officers.

According to investigators, San Diego police officers attempted to make a traffic stop on a high speed vehicle on the southbound 163 south of the 805. The vehicle exited at Genesee and continued on surface streets.

Officers lost sight of the vehicle but continued to search the area. A short time later they found the vehicle unoccupied near Annrae Street and Mesa College Drive

A few minutes later they observed the suspect and attempted to detain him. The suspect produced a handgun and opened fire. Officer Seddon was shot and 2 other officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

Officer Seddon was loaded into a squad car and taken to the Sharp's emergency room by a fellow officer.

The police chief said officer Seddon has been with the department for five years.

The wounded officer was going through a medical procedure, two hours after the shooting, and was talking and smiling, said police officers in a hospital waiting room.

Police later learned the Jeep matched a vehicle connected to a case of shooting vandalism cases on Kearny Mesa, including two such incidents at the SDGE headquarters building, a quarter mile away from the shooting scene, April 17 and May 8. Several other businesses in the area had been hit by gunfire, and SDGE had posted a $10,000 reward for information about the shooter.

A gray SUV, possibly a Jeep Cherokee, had been seen at at least one of the shooting incidents, SDGE officials had said last week.

Officer Seddon is in stable condition.
