Crackdown on drunk driving after rash of deadly crashes

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The CHP, along with seven other local law enforcement agencies, will be out in force this Memorial Day weekend to crack down on drunk driving.

"Any holiday weekend is a maximum enforcement period," said CHP officer Chris Parent.

The crack down comes just weeks after several fatal crashes involving drunk drivers. Last weekend, 23-year-old UCSD medical student Madison Cornwell was killed when a suspected DUI driver going the wrong way on northbound SR-163 crashed head on into her vehicle. Several days earlier on I-15, a man and his 84-year-old mother died after an Audi driving the wrong way plowed into them. Both cases involved wrong way drivers and both drivers were arrested for DUI.

In the North County, law enforcement will be focused on the SR-78 corridor. The CHP reminds drivers that if you see anyone who appears impaired on the road to immediately call 911.
