SeaWorld treating animals rescued from oil spill

A sea lion has died after its rescue from the oil spill at Refugio State Beach, but two other animals continue to be treated at SeaWorld San Diego.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A sea lion has died after its rescue from the oil spill at Refugio State Beach, but two other animals continue to be treated at SeaWorld San Diego.

The L.A. Times reports (http://lat.ms/1HpW1PR ) that the male sea lion was in critical condition when it arrived at SeaWorld Thursday. Workers immediately washed off and hydrated the animal.

Park spokesman Kat Marin says the sea lion nevertheless died early Saturday.

Officials plan to do a necropsy, or animal autopsy, to determine the cause of death.

Another sea lion and an elephant seal were brought to SeaWorld Friday night. They are being treated by veterinarians and other SeaWorld rescue team members and officials say they are cautiously optimistic about their survival.
