Veterans honored at Miramar National Cemetery

Hundreds gathered Sunday at Miramar National Cemetery to honor the true meaning of Memorial Day.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Hundreds gathered Sunday at Miramar National Cemetery to honor the true meaning of Memorial Day.

Honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, around 500 people visited Miramar National Cemetery for its 4th annual Memorial Day ceremony.

The cemetery opened in 2010 and already more than 6,000 people with ties to the military have been buried there.

From the Avenue of Flags, to the Liberation Monument that honors prisoners of war, Miramar National Cemetery has quickly become another final resting place for San Diegans to be proud of.

The ceremony grows every year as more people honor and remember those who helped make our freedom possible.

There will be several more Memorial Day Ceremonies across the county on Monday, including one at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery which begins at 10:00 a.m.
