Fort Rosecrans honors our fallen heroes

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Events honoring our fallen heroes were held across San Diego Monday.

One of the events was the 115th Memorial Service and Day of Remembrance at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery - a ceremony that transcended age, gender and race, as everyone was invited to pay tribute to America's service members. Chairman Jeff Simonides said he wants the Korean War and Vietnam vets to feel more cherished now than they did when returning from combat.

"Doesn't seem that long ago but it's been a long time,” said Glen Silvers.

Silvers served his country proudly during World War II. But his service didn't end there, he's spent a lifetime volunteering with the VFW making ceremonies like Monday's special.

“We cherish the memories of our families that were in the military. Heavy heart for the loss and not being able to be with them," said Silvers.

As people visit graves and lay roses, Silvers stands back knowing he's playing a role in bringing comfort to others. It's not about money for the volunteers who make the Fort Rosecrans Memorial Day ceremony special, it's about honoring those who paid the ultimate prices while serving and comforting their families.

CBS News 8's Ashley Jacobs files the above video report from Monday's ceremony.
