Helping wounded warriors on the home front

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - On Wednesday, a special fundraiser was held to benefit wounded warriors recovering at Camp Pendelton.

Money from the carnival celebrating the 7th Anniversary for Carlsbad's Senor Gurbby's will go to San Diego's Warrior Foundation- Freedom Station.

"It's San Diego's people supporting our warriors," said Sandra Lehmkuhler from the Warrior Foundation-Freedom Station.

Warrior Foundation- Freedom Station is a non-profit that supports injured warriors and their families.

"People don't realize there are still battle injured coming home, and they are still injured up at the hospital," said Lehmkuhler.

The organization helps veterans transition from the hospital to civilian life.

Each year Senor Grubby's chooses a non-profit.

"We try and raise as much awareness," said Justin Jachura, co-founder of Senor Grubby's.

The Warrior Foundation- Freedom Station's mission resonated with the restaurant.

"I think you forget the impact that things have in San Diego, being a military based community, not realizing after these men and women go to war what they have to deal with on the other end of it," said Darby Suval, the event coordinator for Senor Grubby's.

The Hidden City roller derby team also found a way to give back.

Every pitch, pull-up and toss raised money for our injured troops in recovery.

Warrior Foundation- Freedom Station also sends care packages to troops during the holidays and works to bring them home.
