    The damage to interstate highway bridges from flash flooding in Southern California's desert over the weekend proved more widespread than initially thought, with construction crews working Tuesday to reinforce spans over three gullies.

    Heavy rain over the weekend prompted county health officials to close South County beaches to water contact and issue an advisory stating the remainder of the coastline should be avoided.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – Rain storms, a result of Hurricane Dolores, wreaked havoc across San Diego County over the weekend and more wet weather and humidity is expected Monday.

The San Diego River overflowed along Avenida Del Rio between Riverwalk Drive and Camino De La Reina. And, a garage was flooded near the JCPenney department store at Fashion Valley Mall. The bottom floor was under about an inch of water. Crews say flash flooding throughout San Diego County overwhelmed drainage pipes and sewer systems. 

Alvarado Creek was swollen and spilled out into a business park, knocking over fences, flooding engines and damaging cars. 

[WEATHER UPDATE: Rain and strong surf expected along with muggy conditions]

Dangerously slick streets caused low visibility for drivers on freeways and roadways as mud and rocks covered the ground. Heavy rain also created problems on Interstate 805 in Chula Vista and extended to Old Julian Highway near the Cleveland National Forest.

SDG&E reported about 2,800 customers were without power in Oceanside and Bonita, and crews worked overnight to restore electricity.
