Storm made beach cliffs even more unstable

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Last weekend's historic summer storm brought some much needed rain to the San Diego region, but it left behind some dangerous conditions at local beaches.

This past weekend, San Diego lifeguards performed 20 rescues in and around Torrey Pines. Constant rain caused trails to become waterfalls of silt and debris, making it difficult for people to fight against the torrents of water as they made their way along the trails. Lifeguard rescue helicopters played a critical role in the rescues and were constantly pulling people out of a canyon that became impassible. On Saturday, one woman suffered a serious injury after breaking her femur. To protect people, the trails were shut down on Monday until the area dried out. Lifeguards are urging people to pay attention to the forecast when making plans to go to the beach.

"Well July is a pretty odd  month to talk about rain storms. If you have a heads up with the National Weather Service providing good intelligence about oncoming storms, it's good to heed their directions," says San Diego Fire-Rescue  Lt. Andy Lerum.

Lifeguards say the only injury was on Saturday and that no one was injured during the rest of the weekend.
