Agreement approved for San Onofre nuclear storage

On Tuesday, the County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding about a plan to store nuclear waste at San Onofre.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - On Tuesday, the County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a memorandum of understanding about a plan to store nuclear waste at San Onofre.

The $1.6 million agreement was sent to Southern California Edison on Tuesday.

The plan would cover the cost of emergency services for the next four years, but opponents said keeping used nuclear fuel along the coast could be a disaster.

"We're putting three million, 600,000-pounds of high level nuclear waste permanently in North County San Diego," said

The county's stated opposition to storing the waste at San Onofre was also included in the memorandum, but ultimately, the federal government will make the last decision.
