Proposal to preserve Carlsbad open space

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Big changes could be coming along the Southern shore of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon in Carlsbad.

On Tuesday, a citizens group gave a tour of previously private property that is now the proposed location for a 203-acre open space and shopping center.

The space would include miles of hiking trails, strawberry farms, and picnic areas.

"Our goal is to have a decision by the city of Carlsbad later this fall. and if all goes well, we'll move directly into coastal commission. and when coastal commission completes, we'll be ready to start construction. and if everything goes according to plan, we'll be open in the fall of 2018," said Vice-President of Carlsbad Affiliated, Bryce Ross.

Revenue from the shopping center would fund the creation and maintenance of the open space, and it will occupy 15-percent, or 26-acres of the land.
