Oceanside man finds piece of history in the trash

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - An Oceanside man found a World War II scrapbook in the trash, and now he is trying to track down the owner by asking for the public's help.

When Gary Davis found a scrapbook on top of the receptacle at his mobile home park, he peeked inside, but had no idea he would find what he calls a historical enigma.

When he opened the tattered green scrapbook with a Cocker Spaniel on the cover, discolored pages took Gary back to the World War II era.

"Each one of these pictures tells a separate story," he said.

Gary found the book filled with newspaper clippings of President Harry Truman, Winston Churchill, and several baseball legends like Babe Ruth.

"I took it home and sat on our couch, and I looked through these things. I looked at my wife and said, get over here and check this out," he said.

Gary does not know who would dump such a historical enigma, but believes it was someone cleaning a house of someone who passed away.

Gary said the new find has brought his father's World War II journals as a sailor to life.

"We need to slow down and look at what we have, we need to be proud of our history," he said.

The clippings did not have a date or the publisher, but Gary hopes someone will recognize the scrapbook, or wants to donate it to a historical society.
