Child nearly drowns at Vista water park

VISTA (CBS 8) - A 10-year-old boy was airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital Thursday morning after nearly drowning at the Wave Water Park in Vista.

The boy was a member of one of ten children's camps that attended the park Thursday. Wave employees say that the boy jumped into the big wave pool and hit the water so hard that he hurt his head. He then went underwater where lifeguards found him facedown. He was pulled from the water and lifeguards immediately treated the boy at the scene.

Vista firefighters were dispatched to the park at 11:30 a.m.

"When the child was removed from the water, he had diminished breathing. He was provided rescue breathing from the lifeguards and at that point, his breathing improved dramatically," says Vista Fire Battalion Chief Todd Feneis.

According to Vista Fire officials, the boy had a preexisting medical condition but he was responsive and talking during the ambulance ride.

"It's everyone’s responsibility to be water wise and water safe and keep an eye on your kids at all times and never let your guard down," says Chief Feneis.

The boy was airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital by Mercy Air. The boy's current condition in unknown.

The water park continued to operate after the boy was airlifted. The Wave Water Park is owned and operated by the City of Vista.
