SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Hitting the waves at the Oceanside Pier are some of the best female surfers in the world.

Supergirl Pro, the largest all women's surf contest includes competitors ranging in age from 12 to 34 years old.

"Everything about this event is really fun I'm stoked," Caroline Marks said.

One of the youngest surfers this year is 13-year-old Phenom, Caroline Marks. She's only in the 7th grade and this is her second year here.

"It's amazing, you know, great experience to get to surf against your heroes. It's so fun, yeah," she said.

"We're seeing the very best out there and the waves match the caliber of the women performing," Event Organizer, Rick Bratman said.

Bratman says the level of competition just gets better and better.

"It's really important to provide a platform for women, the women have been progressing at a higher level than the men in a lot of ways," he said.

Thousands crowded the beach and the pier to get the perfect viewing spot. Finishing up her heat was crowd favorite Pro Surfer, Paige Haireb, from New Zealand.

"It's so good to see so many girls so many young ones coming through," Haireb said.

She took time to sign autographs and posed for several pictures.

"You feel a little bit superstar-ish and you try to do the right thing and be a role model," Haireb said.

Among her fans was 10-year-old Brooke Moon from Utah, who says just to be here is pretty awesome.

"I just want to grow up to be like them," she said.
