Third suspect arrested in 2011 shooting death

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A third suspect has been arrested in connection with the 2011 gang-related shooting death of a 28-year-old man near San Diego's Manzanita Canyon, authorities said.

Investigators with the Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Station arrested 25-year-old Callie Beasley of San Diego on Saturday in connection with the murder of Cordell King.

On Friday detectives arrested two other suspects in connection with the killing. They were identified as 28-year-old Jennifer Lee Whitmer of Lincoln Park and Dionte J. Simpson, 25, who has been in custody at the South Bay Detention Facility on unrelated charges since May 2014, police said. Whitmer was arrested at her home.

Beasley, who was arrested in the Harbor City section of Los Angeles, was booked into the Las Colinas Detention Facility and was due to be arraigned Wednesday, according to Lt. Paul Rorrison of the San Diego Police Department's Homicide Unit.

Rorrison said the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are anticipated.

King was standing near the sidewalk in the 4600 block of Thorn Street just after 5 p.m. on April 17, 2011, when a vehicle with four suspects inside pulled up to him and stopped, Rorrison said.

"Several gunshots were fired at Cordell, striking him several times in the torso," he said.

The vehicle initially drove off, but turned around and returned to the scene, at which time a suspect exited and shot King several more times while he was down, according to Rorrison.

Officers found King lying in the street. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the lieutenant said.

San Diego police detectives and the district attorney's office investigated the case for four years and recently developed information that led to the identification of the three suspects, Rorrison said.
