SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank has installed new solar panels which will save the organization money and allow it to help more San Diegans.

The 1,400 panels were recently installed on the roof of the food bank's 80,000-square-foot warehouse facility.

The food bank serves 370,000 San Diegans every month and officials said the savings in energy costs will have a big impact on the fight against hunger in San Diego.

"It's going to save us more than $120,000 a year. That equates to more than 600,000 meals.

The solar panels are also helping the food bank become more environmentally friendly.

The facility will also install a composting and recycling center this fall.
