LOS ANGELES (CBS 8/CNS) - Thousands of teachers gathered at nearly three dozen college campuses across California Friday, including locations in San Diego, for a conference designed to allow educators to network and share strategies for implementing new statewide teaching standards.
As many as 20,000 teachers attended sessions at campuses throughout California as part of the "Better Together: California Teachers Summit."

Conference sessions were held at California State University and other college campuses. At Cal State Northridge, 2012 National Teacher of the Year

Rebecca Mieliwocki -- a CSUN alum -- took part in sessions that explored "best classroom practices."

"Everyone thinks they know how to teach because they've been a student and really no one understands teaching like teachers and so we get to see some great presenters and discuss our own, personal experiences," said Keith Hammond who is an Olympian High School teacher.

Speakers at other sessions included actress Yvette Nicole Brown of "Community" and "The Odd Couple," along with astronaut Leland Melvin, NASA's associate administrator for education.
The conference was a collaboration of CSU, New Teacher Center and the Association of Independent California Colleges and Universities.
The summit included sessions on "participatory learning" and discussions about teachers' aspirations for the new school year.
