New Santee trail inspires people to take a hike

SANTEE (CBS 8) - The City of Santee is celebrating its first summer after opening the Walker Preserve Trail.

The 1.3 mile path provides access to a 107 acre nature preserve that stretches from Magnolia Avenue east to Santee's border with Lakeside.

The Walker Preserve Trail is a crucial segment of a 52 mile long river park and trail system that someday will extend from the river's headwaters near Julian to the Pacific Ocean at Ocean Beach.

The 14 foot wide path is constructed of compressed decomposed granite and is bordered by wooden lodge-pole fencing.

A few historic artifacts have been placed along the route, including the original plow used on the Walker family dairy farm that once occupied the property and a dragline dredge bucket once used to extract sand from the river.

Walkers, runners, equestrians and bicyclists are all welcome to use the trail.

The Walker Preserve property was purchased by the City of Santee in 2012 with grant funds from state and federal agencies. The property was targeted for conservation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service because it contains high-quality habitat that supports at least three federally protected bird species: the Southwestern willow flycatcher, the California gnatcatcher and the least Bell's vireo.
