SWAT team called into Chula Vista apartment complex

CHULA VISTA (CNS) - A South Bay man allegedly fired a gun into a neighbor's apartment Friday afternoon and then holed up inside his own, prompting a nearly 2 1/2-hour police standoff that ended with his peaceful surrender.

The gunfire erupted in the 1500 block of Brandywine Avenue in Chula Vista about 4 p.m., Lt. Don Redmond said. No injuries were reported.

Officers tried in vain to get the alleged shooter -- described by relatives as possibly suicidal -- to give himself up, then called in a SWAT team to take up positions in the area in preparation for forcibly entering his residence if necessary.

Police were working on getting other residents of the complex out of harm's way as the special weapons and tactics personnel were en route, Redmond said.

Authorities closed the nearby northbound Interstate 805 exit to Olympic Parkway as a precaution.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m., the suspect exited his apartment and surrendered peacefully, Redmond said. Officers planned to clear the man's residence of any weapons before reopening traffic lanes in the area to the public.

The suspect's name was not immediately available.
