SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Homicide detectives are investigating a murder, after a man was shot to death at a Skyline area park. The suspect fled the scene.

San Diego's Homicide Unit reported that a 41-year-old man was gunned at Marie Wideman Memorial Park on Imperial Avenue near 67th Street around 8:15 p.m. Sunday.

Officers said shots rang out and someone called 911. The victim was found on the sidewalk at the park with one gunshot wound to his upper body. The man's friend is in utter shock.

"I've known him for 20 years, he's a good person and I don't understand why he got shot," said Barbara Collins.

Officers placed the area on lockdown for hours during their investigation and have released a sketchy description of the getaway vehicle, which was a sports utility vehicle:

"The only suspect info we have is a light colored vehicle leaving the park westbound for the moment," explained Lt. Mike Hastings with the San Diego Homicide Unit.

The victim was rushed to the hospital, and paramedics performed life-saving measures, but the man did not survive.

Homicide detectives said his identity won't be released until family is notified.

As of this report, police do not have a description of the suspect.

Police asked anyone with additional information on the shooting to call the Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
