SAN DIEGO (AP) - Bai Yun, the giant panda at the San Diego Zoo, is not pregnant.

Zoo officials said Monday that despite an insemination attempt, the 24-year-old mother of six cubs will not be having a seventh.

Officials say tests show Bai Yun's hormone level has receded back to a level showing that she is no longer capable of conception.

The Los Angeles Times reports part of Bai Yun's fame comes from the fact that she is the mother of Hua Mei, born in 1999. Hua Mei was the first panda cub born in the United States to survive to adulthood.

Hua Mei is now in China.

Zoo officials may ask the Chinese government to allow Bai Yun to retire at the San Diego Zoo in emeritus, non-reproductive status.
