Man pleads guilty in U.K. to La Jolla school threat

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A British man who was in England when he called in a bomb threat to La Jolla Country Day School in San Diego pleaded guilty in the United Kingdom to three counts of harassment and one count of violating a restraining order, authorities said Tuesday.

William John Cooper, 39, is scheduled to be sentenced in Britain on Sept. 1.

Cooper is also charged with similar crimes in San Diego.

San Diego Unified Schools chief Rueben Littlejohn and his team worked with the San Diego County District Attorney's Office and officials in England to investigate the threats.

Because he carried out the threats while residing in England, officials there were able to charge and prosecute him for crimes he committed against individuals in San Diego, according to authorities.

Cooper was arrested June 26 at his home in Southampton, Hampshire, and authorities seized his computers and phone.

Even though the defendant is being prosecuted in England, he can and will be prosecuted in San Diego County if he returns to the United States, authorities said.

At this time, there are no plans to extradite Cooper to San Diego unless he is already on U.S. soil, according to the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.
