Firefighter falls through roof of burning Miramar restaurant

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8/CNS) - A two-alarm blaze erupted in a Miramar-area Indian restaurant Wednesday, causing extensive damage and leaving a firefighter and an employee of the eatery with reported minor injuries.

The fire started in the kitchen and began spreading through Bombay Grill at 7050 Miramar Road around 9:50 a.m.

A cook, preparing for the eatery's 11 a.m. opening, suffered a superficial burn to one of his ears while trying in vain to prevent the blaze from growing, SDFRD spokesman Joe Amador said.
A fire captain also was hurt when he fell through the charred roof of the building while helping break holes in the structure to release heat. The fire captain fell about 15 feet through the roof. At the scene, he did not seem injured, but was transported to the hospital for observation. The restaurant cook was also taken to the hospital for evaluation.
It took about 60 firefighters 30 minutes to knock down the flames.

The cause remains under investigation.
