Drivers injured in two vehicle crash in City Heights

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - A collision in the City Heights area Thursday morning sent two motorists to a hospital and left a busy stretch of El Cajon Boulevard closed for part of the morning.

Firefighters rushed to the scene shortly before 8:30 a.m. after a light blue car T-boned a Tacoma pickup truck that was traveling north on 46th Street at El Cajon Boulevard. The impact caused the truck to roll over, trapping the driver inside.

Officers on the scene reported that the front of the car acted like a wedge and lifted the pickup. Airbags deployed in the sedan.

Crews used the Jaws of Life to rescue the man trapped in the pickup truck.

"The vehicle needed to have its roof peeled open. There was no other option other than cutting off the roof to get him free,” said Captain Greg George with San Diego Fire-Rescue Department

Both drivers were transported to local hospitals for evaluation. CBS News 8 was told they suffered non-life threatening injuries. However, their conditions were not known as of this report.

Immediately following the accident, eastbound El Cajon Boulevard was closed between Chamoune and Menlo avenues, and westbound El Cajon Boulevard was shut down at Menlo Avenue, according to police.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes were re-opened around 10:00 a.m.
