LEMON GROVE (CNS) - An investigation was underway Friday into a shooting that left a few homes in Lemon Grove with bullet holes and area hospitals on the lookout for a possible victim.

Someone summoned deputies to the 3500 block of West Street near Broadway after hearing several gunshots shortly after 4:30 p.m. Thursday, according to sheriff's Sgt. Michelle McPhail. The caller told authorities a man had possibly been shot in his left hand and was hiding near a backyard shed.

Deputies checked three area homes for the possible victim, but came up empty-handed. They were also unable to locate a suspect, McPhail said. However, blood was found behind one residence, sheriff's officials said.

Authorities asked area hospitals to notify them if someone shows up to be treated for a gunshot wound.

"The investigation is in the beginning stages," McPhail said in a statement. "There is no one in custody at this time."

Anyone with information on the shooting was asked to call the sheriff's department at (858) 565-5200 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
