Arraignment set for suspect in homeless camp murder

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Colorado man accused of killing his girlfriend, whose battered body turned up in a makeshift camp used by transients in the San Diego community of Egger Highlands, is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at the downtown courthouse.

Martin Joseph Foster, 53, was taken into custody late Wednesday night in connection with the death of 61-year-old Cheri Dillon-Casey.

Patrol officers found Dillon-Casey dead in a field near the intersection of Palm Avenue and Saturn Boulevard early Tuesday afternoon, Lt. Mike Hastings said. The San Diego woman had suffered blunt-force injuries to her upper body, and the county Medical Examiner's Office ruled her death a homicide.

Hastings was named a "person of interest" in the woman's death the following day. Authorities disclosed no suspected motive for the slaying.

About 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, officers dispatched to check on a man near Horton Plaza found Foster suffering from minor injuries, Hastings said. It was unclear how he'd gotten hurt.

Foster was treated at a hospital before being booked into San Diego Central Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. He was being held without bail pending today's scheduled hearing, when he will be asked how he pleads.
