Car slams into pedestrians in City Heights

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A hit-and-run collision on a City Heights street injured five people Friday afternoon, one seriously.

The wreck at 49th Street and University Avenue occurred shortly before 2 p.m., according to police, when a 2000 Volvo was struck from behind by another vehicle, according to police.

The Volvo hit a car in front of it, then careened onto a sidewalk, crashed into a light pole, a wall and a pair of boys ages 15 and 13, and finally struck a parked vehicle, San Diego Police Department Sgt. Ray Battrick said.

Both the driver who caused the accident and the motorist whose vehicle was hit in turn by the Volvo drove off afterward.

The younger pedestrian suffered severe trauma to his left leg. The other teen was left with minor injuries, as were the driver of the Volvo and a passenger in her car. Medics took all four to Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest.

A fifth patient did not require hospital care, a fire department spokesman said.

The accident left traffic lanes blocked in the area through late afternoon.
