Search for gunman after man shot in front of City Heights market

On Monday night, a man was shot multiple times in City Heights outside World Foods Market on El Cajon Boulevard.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) – A 33-year-old man is hospitalized, with life threatening injuries, after being shot multiple times in front of the World Foods Market in City Heights Monday night.

The gunfire erupted around 9:00 p.m. in the 5200 block of El Cajon Boulevard, and now officers are now searching for the gunman.

One man who lives nearby just got home from walking his dog when he heard the gunshots Monday night.

"I heard four shots and I asked my girlfriend ‘is that gunshots’ and seconds later and three go off. oh it was," said Alex Martinez

Martinez, who moved to the area a couple months ago, said he heard the area was known to be violent, but said with a six-year-old son, his concern for their safety has heightened now that a shooting happened in the middle of the street.

“I'm close to school, parks. I thought it was going to be safer, but the deeper you go the worse it is,” added Martinez.

Police said the shooting was not gang-related, but the motive was not immediately determined. According to San Diego police Officer Dino Delimitros, investigators were working to determine what led to the attack.

Police described the suspect as black and 5 feet 8 to 5 feet 10 with a medium to large build and braided hair. He was wearing a white shirt and gray sweatpants and was last seen running south on 52nd Street.

The victim was last listed in critical condition.

Anyone with information in this case, is asked to contact the San Diego Police Department.
