Military Veterans receive college diplomas on the USS Midway

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - On Tuesday, more than 50 veterans and active duty military members received college diplomas aboard the USS Midway Museum.

One Naval veteran served his country for 20-years, then despite raising a family, found the time to go back to school to earn a college degree.

Argosy University in San Diego hosted the Veteran Commencement Ceremony aboard the USS Midway. Congressman Scott Peters from California's 52nd District gave a speech and thanked the veterans for their service to the country.

One of the graduates who is a 20-year military veteran, Norberto Gonyea, shared his inspirational story with CBS News 8.

For Gonyea, it was his first time back in a classroom since 1986.

He worked hard to apply the discipline he learned from being in the military and would stay up late taking care of his children and working on his course work.

Norberto graduated along with 55 other active duty/veteran students. His daughter has just begun attending college and is proud to see her father graduate as Summa Cum Laude.

The USS Midway was America's longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century, from 1945 to 1992. Approximately 200,000 sailors served aboard the carrier, known for several naval aviation breakthroughs and humanitarian missions.

Norberto Gonyea graduated Summa Cum Laude from Argosy University. He hopes to find a managerial job with the federal government.
