Cox launches Gigabit Internet service in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Internet speeds are getting lightning fast for some San Diegans.

Cox Communications announced on Wednesday it's launching its Gigabit internet service.

The company said the service is 100-times faster than the average Internet speed in the U.S., today.

Gigabit is capable of downloading an HD movie in about minute.

Mayor Faulconer said the increased speeds will help keep San Diego competitive.

"It's great to see that our innovation economy continues to thrive here in San Diego. With this gigablast, and these increased internet speeds, it's not only going to help our new startups, our families, our kids," said the mayor.

The Gigabit service has already been installed in the Pinnacle apartment building in the East Village, some new single-family home communities in Escondido Northern San Diego County.

Cox hopes to expand it in the near future.
