Driver crashes car into laundromat in Clairemont shopping center

A vehicle that struck a laundromat off of Balboa Avenue Friday morning left a gaping hole and shattered glass behind.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An 80-year-old woman crashed her car into a laundromat in a Clairemont-area shopping center Friday, pinning two people under her car, authorities said.

The driver hit the gas instead of the brake and crashed into the business at 5555 Balboa Avenue shortly before 9 a.m., according to San Diego police and fire officials.

Two people trapped under the woman's car were freed relatively easily and were taken to San Diego-area hospitals with serious injuries, San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Lee Swanson said.

The driver was hospitalized with minor injuries, officials said.

A fourth person inside the business was hit with flying glass, but was treated on-scene, officials said.

There is no structural damage to the building, Swanson said.

An estimate on the damage was not immediately available.

It is not known yet on whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
