POWAY (CNS) - A brush fire broke out in Poway Friday, shutting down part of the northbound and southbound lanes State Route 67.

The fire started just before 12:45 p.m. and quickly grew to about two acres. For a while, the freeway was closed in both directions from Poway Road to Mount Woodson while air and ground crews worked to knock down the flames, according to the California Highway Patrol. As of 4:00 p.m., only one lane was open in both directions.

According to the CHP, a driver operating a motor home towing a vehicle reported that the car lost a tire and was sparking, with white smoke pouring out of the back, possibly starting the fire.

San Diego Fire-Rescue will look into the report as they work to determine the cause of the blaze, Cal Fire Capt. Kendal Bortisser said.

As of 2 p.m., the fire was holding at two acres, Bortisser said.

As of this report, no structures were threatened.
