Man rescued from middle of brush fire in Ventura County

Posted: Updated:

A helicopter crew made a daring rescue in the middle of a brush fire in Simi Valley Friday morning.

The fire started when two vehicles crashed on the 118 freeway around 5:30 a.m. Friday.

A truck flew off the roadway and fell 300 feet down an embankment. That crash sparked the brush fire.

As the fire burned around the driver, crews were lowered down to hoist him up.

“We had a bit of an inversion layer, which caused the smoke to settle into the basin where the fire occurred so visually it was a challenge for these pilots to locate and get this patient out,” explained Captain Scott Dettorre with the Ventura County Fire Department.

The fire burned about 10 acres before crews knocked it out.
