Planned SDG&E power outages in the middle of the heat wave

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) -  Thousands of San Diegans are losing power in the middle of a heat wave this weekend as SDG&E moves forward with planned power outages for maintenance work.

“We really need to do this work to make sure there are not unplanned or unexpected power outages in the future,” said Amber Elbrecht, SDG&E spokesperson.

From Friday night to Saturday evening SDG&E planned 14 power outages all over San Diego County.

In the San Ysidro area 1,500 customers are affected from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

In the Kensington/Talmadge area 800 customers will be impacted overnight starting Friday at 10:00 p.m. to Saturday at 8:00 a.m.

“It was so warm the air was running last night at 11 at night or 11:30,” said Leslie Pally, Talmadge resident.

SDG&E says most of the planned outages are planned overnight during the heat wave.

“We have been making sure that our conditions continue to be in those moderate temperatures in the evening and not much of an inconvenience and safe for our crews,” said Elbrecht.

The power company sent notices to customers impacted last week.

“I always think how inconvenient and then I think what is the big deal,” said Pally.

SDG&E says despite the expected record-breaking temperatures over the weekend, SDG&E says it will not hold off on the planned outages.

“Unfortunately when you wait that is when the unexpected will happen and that is what we are trying to avoid,” said Elbrecht.

The biggest impact in the heat will be in Pine Valley on Saturday. Planned outages are scheduled from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Temperatures are expected to reach 96 degrees.

SDG&E says crews delayed the outages four times and feedback from the community was to get the work done.

A cooling zone and movie will be set up at the library.
