Power outages leave San Diegans to sweat it out

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - On one of the hottest days of the year, with temperatures soaring near the triple digits in pine valley. Several homes were without power with no fans and no air conditioning.

SDG&E shut off power to more than 200 customers in that area as part of a planned power outage. One of more than a dozen this weekend throughout the county.

Most of the outages occurred overnight. Pine Valley's outage started Saturday morning and was scheduled to end at 4:00 p.m.

"Why on a Saturday of all the days, everyone's home, no one's at work," Cameron Yeager said.

Notices were sent out to customers, including Cameron Yeager and Dan Bowman. Saturday they hit a cool zone at the public library to escape the sweltering heat inside their home.

"They're doing it on a weekend when it's hot, I just want to be at home and relax," Yeager said.

"85 is when I head for an ice cube and try to crawl inside of it." Dan Bowman said.

Outside their house, SDG&E crews worked on power lines up and down their street. The company says the planned outages are necessary.

"We really need to do this work so there's not unexpected outages in the future," Amber Elbrecht said.

Myrna Mora is another customer without power, but she has a different take on it.

"I don't know that I have any complaints, the people I feel bad for are the guys who are out there working in this heat," Mora said.

"For us to whine and we can sit in here, I don't think that's fair, they're out there sweating," Mora said.

Meanwhile, Cameron and Dan says to SDG&E, "I know you can't plan for the hotness, but please don't do it on a weekend. Do it when no one's at home."
