Prosecutors won't file charges in hookah shooting

A man arrested in connection with the slaying of another man at a Rolando smoking club last November is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at the downtown courthouse.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - No charges were filed today against one of three men accused in the slaying of another man at a Rolando smoking club last November.

Carl Antuan Martin, 33, was taken into custody last Thursday after a traffic stop in the 9700 block of Carroll Canyon Road and had been scheduled to be arraigned Monday.

Steve Walker, a spokesman for the District Attorney's Office, said the decision not to charge Martin at this time was made after a thorough review of the case. The investigation, however, is continuing, Walker said.

Martin was booked in the Nov. 16  death of 29-year-old Rodney Harmon, who was shot about 4 a.m. at the Crown Hookah Lounge in the 7000 block of El Cajon Boulevard.

Two other suspects, Pierre Verenee Readus, 28, and Neil Edward Downey, 26, both of San Diego, were indicted by a grand jury on Aug. 6.

Readus was arrested in April for a probation violation. He has pleaded not guilty in Harmon's death and remains in county jail.

Downey is a fugitive, with a $2 million warrant out for his arrest, police said.

Anyone with information about Downey's whereabouts was asked to call the homicide unit of the San Diego Police Department, their local law enforcement agency, or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
