Stricter punishments for off-campus assaults

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Governor Jerry Brown is reviewing a new bill.

It would allow community colleges to punish students for off-campus sexual assaults.

It gives community colleges the right to suspend or expel students who have committed sexual assault, even if the victim does not attend the same school, or the incident did not occur on campus.

Existing laws authorize community colleges to take such actions only if the student's behavior is directly related to college activity or attendance.

State colleges already have the authority to punish students for actions that occur outside campus borders.
