App finds new ways to serve 'Green Eggs and Ham'

ENCINITAS, Calif. (CBS 8) -- Green Eggs and Ham remains one of the top-selling children's books of all time.

Now, a local software company is taking classic Dr. Seuss to a whole new level by serving Green Eggs and Ham on a tablet computer.

The new, interactive reading app is targeted to children ages 3 to 6, and is being released this week by Encinitas-based, Oceanhouse Media.

“What we’re doing here is we're taking the original classic text and updating it for the touchscreen generation,” said the company’s CEO, Michel Kripalani.

Kripalani, himself the father of two young girls, landed the Dr. Seuss contract six years ago to create a series of electronic books.  This latest version – dubbed “read and learn” -- includes the most interactive elements.

“Every page in the story has a hidden learning activity.  So, there ends up being over 30 of these learning activities.  There are little stars that are fun for the child to be able to find,” Kripalani said.

Oceanhouse Media employs a small crew of artists and computer coders who animate original 2D drawings from the entire Dr. Seuss collection.

“We use a lot of techniques so the individual words as they’re being read are drawing the child’s attention.  Tapping on the words will allow the child to understand what the group of symbols means,” said Kripalani.

Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat was launched as a read and learn app four weeks ago.  Green Eggs and Ham will be launched this week.  Currently, the team is working on an app for How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which will be out in time for the holidays.

“What we're doing is going back through all the Dr. Seuss classic works and taking them to this much higher level of interactivity with learning and playful moments,” Kripalani said.

Green Eggs and Ham can be downloaded from the app store at a cost of $4.99 for Apple devices only starting August 20.
