Police chase stretches from El Cajon to Carlsbad

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - California Highway Patrol officers said a burglary suspect caused chaos as he blew through red lights and started a chase on Interstate 805 overnight, while trying to dodge officers in a Toyota Prius.

The hour-long police pursuit started in El Cajon around 12:30 a.m., after a business was burglarized at the 1300 block of Hill Street. The suspect led police on a chase that covered several highways, including westbound State Route 94, then northbound on I-805 and to I-5.

The CHP said the white Toyota Prius was weaving through streets and flying through red lights. To stop the suspect, officers deployed spike strips which flattened the car tires. The CHP also conducted a "pit maneuver" to spin the car around. The car then stopped on Carlsbad Boulevard, south of Cannon Road. At one point, El Cajon,San Diego and Oceanside police officers joined forces to catch the suspect.

After the chase ended around 1:30 p.m., officers said they searched the car.

"He was found to be in possession of narcotics and the vehicle was determined to be a stolen plate with a cold plate attached," explained Sgt. Patrick Holt with the CHP.

A cold plate is a license plate that is not traceable, which is illegal.

Police found other items in the stolen Toyota Prius, but they're not sure if the items belonged to the burglarized store.

The suspect will be facing charges, including burglary, initiating a police pursuit and possession of drugs.
