BORREGO SPRINGS (CNS) - A 2-month-old boy has died from injuries suffered in a collision near Borrego Springs that also killed the 27-year-old woman driving the car in which he was a passenger, authorities said Friday.

The Borrego Springs woman who had been driving the 2013 Volkswagen sedan involved in the crash on Borrego Springs Road near San Pablo Road shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday died at the scene, California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Pearlstein said. The infant was airlifted to Rady Children's Hospital after the crash, but also succumbed to his injuries.

Pearlstein said the Volkswagen's driver pulled to the side of the road in anticipation of making a U-turn, but did not see a 2001 Dodge pickup approaching from behind at 50 to 55 miles per hour, which was within the speed limit. The sedan turned into the truck's path.

The pickup truck's driver hit the brakes, but was unable to stop in time and crashed into the car's left side, Pearlstein said.

The Volkswagen's driver was killed in the crash. The baby, who Pearlstein said had been properly restrained behind the driver, later died at the hospital.

A 51-year-old woman who was a front seat passenger in the Volkswagen suffered moderate non-life-threatening injuries, and the pickup's 60-year-old driver sustained only minor injuries, Pearlstein said.

Pearlstein said neither alcohol nor drugs were factors in the collision.
