Mother and daughter remembered

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - They were mother and daughter. The best of friends, and beloved San Diego veterinarians.

On Friday, family and friends stopped to remember Diane and Katie Defenbaugh who were killed earlier this month in a tragic head-on crash.

Friday's memorial service was held just one block away from where Dr. Diane Defenbaugh had worked as a devoted veterinarian for decades.

Her daughter Katy had also chosen to become a veterinarian. Both did what they loved the most.

Friday's celebration of both women's lives left no doubt that both women were beloved.

"Diane and Katherine were all but inseparable. A relationship that was much more than just loving mother and daughter. They were best friends," said Mark Sauer, a family friend.

Best friends in life, who together, met their tragic and untimely deaths.

Last Thursday morning, 63-year-old Diane Defenbaugh and her daughter Katie were heading to SeaWorld on Highway 125 to celebrate Katie's 29th birthday.

A 27-year-old Spring Valley man driving a GMC Yukon in the opposite direction crossed the center divider and collided head-on with the woman. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

At Friday's service, Diane Defenbaugh was celebrated as a staple of the community for 35-years. She had worked at the VCA Angel Animal Hospital in North Park.

She was remembered as nurturing, caring and compassionate.

Her daughter, Katie, had followed her mother's footsteps and had recently finished vet school. She was just starting out in her career.

Both shared a love for animals, Disney stories, Harry Potter books, and happy endings.

Dr. Katie Defenbaugh had recently graduated from UC Davis Vet School in 2013, and was working as a veterinarian at Banfield Pet Hospital in Chula Vista.

Both will be laid to rest together in Chicago where Diane grew up.

Family of Diane and Katie Defenbaugh have asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the non-profit Canine Companions for Independence.
