Couple rescued from sailboat grounded in Coronado

Early Tuesday morning, a towing service came to the rescue of a rented sailboat in Coronado after it got stuck on sandbar the night before with a couple stuck inside.

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Early Tuesday morning, a towing service came to the rescue of a rented sailboat in Coronado after it got stuck on a sandbar Monday night with a couple still inside.

The couple were out celebrating their one year anniversary when the incident happened around 11:00 p.m. Despite their previous sailing experience, they weren't able to get the boat, named Indian Summer, to budge.

'We were sailing along and we hit a sandbar, even though we know what we're doing. Lifelong sailor, but hit a sandbar and the surf took us in,” said Mike, the husband.

Mike eventually swam to shore for help. When he got there, someone at a nearby hotel had already called 911. Coronado police and lifeguard personnel responded and waded through shallow water, all while the waves were crashing, in order to rescue Mike's wife.

Once on shore, the couple says they were a bit shaken, but otherwise okay, stating it's an anniversary they will never forget.

The couple was not cited for any wrongdoing.
