Tenants rally against poor living conditions in El Cajon

Posted: Updated:

EL CAJON (CBS 8) - Collapsed roofs, wet carpets, plus, mold and insects from recent rain are just a few of the complaints being voiced by residents at a local apartment complex.

According to some of the tenants, contractors were doing work before the recent storm, but they didn't properly cover the roof. When heavy rains came, there was a lot of damage left behind. Possibly as many as 25 units here have ceilings that caved in.

The San Diego chapter of the National Action Network says it's beginning a housing justice campaign. More than 50 tenants are expected to be out rallying Wednesday afternoon. Tenants say they will not be paying rent.

Community leaders will hold a rally on their behalf, calling for repairs and better living conditions.

The property manager has told tenants everyone with damaged roofs will be put up in hotels for the next couple of days.

The rally is scheduled to take place Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
