SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Students, faculty and staff at community colleges around San Diego took part Thursday morning in a national moment of silence for victims of last week's mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon, where nine people were killed.

The observance was set for 11 a.m. Pacific Time, according to the San Diego Community College District.

Participants at the San Diego City College event on Gorton Quad locked arms in solidarity with the victims. The observance at San Diego Mesa College, with school President Pamela Luster taking part, took place at the campus Rose Garden near the library.

MiraCosta College in Oceanside is also to take part in the observance. At Southwestern College in Chula Vista, an event took place at 11:45 a.m. at the amphitheater on campus.

The Oct. 1 shooting also wounded nine people. Authorities said Wednesday that the gunman killed himself after being wounded in a shootout with two plainclothes detectives who responded to the scene.
