Shooting in Mira Mesa leads to Sorrento Valley chase

San Diego police investigating reports of shots fired at a vehicle in Mira Mesa.

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect in an early-morning shooting led officers Friday on a brief Sorrento Valley-area road chase that ended when he crashed an SUV and ran off in a failed attempt to evade arrest.

Patrol personnel began pursuing the man in the 5900 block of Lusk Boulevard about 10:30 a.m., roughly nine hours after he opened fire on a vehicle for unknown reasons, damaging it but causing no injuries, according to San Diego police spokesman Mark Herring.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately available, fled to the west for several blocks before losing control of the black Range Rover, sending it crashing into a guardrail and fence at Vista Sorrento Parkway, just east of Interstate 805, Herring said.

The driver jumped out of the damaged SUV and ran off into a brushy field. Officers surrounded the area and arrested him on a hillside about 20 minutes later, Herring said.

The circumstances of the shooting were unclear, though the owner of the targeted car apparently was in or near it at the time, since the crime was designated as an assault with a deadly weapon, Herring said.
