California governor OKs medical marijuana regulations

Posted: Updated:

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a trio of bills designed to rein in and regulate the state's medical marijuana industry for the first time.

The governor's endorsement Friday of the legislative package hammered out by lawmakers was expected because his office crafted many of the details.

The bills create the first statewide licensing and operating rules for pot growers, manufacturers of cannabis products and retail weed outlets since California legalized medical marijuana in 1996.

The legislation also preserves individual rights to grow small amounts of medical marijuana for personal use and allows local governments to ban or tax marijuana-related businesses.

The state is expected to start issuing licenses in 2018.

Meanwhile, supporters of legalizing recreational marijuana use in California are proposing several voter initiatives for the November 2016 ballot.
