Waterfront park closed to the public this weekend

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - As record-level temperatures rise across San Diego, residents are looking for some relief, but one place they will not find it is at the county's Waterfront Park.

The fountains and splash pads will be turned off this weekend.

Isabell Knock said the Waterfront Park is a great place for the little ones to cool down during the crazy October heat wave, but this weekend, the water park will be closed.

This weekend, the Waterfront Park will host the 21-and-over, Crossed Festival. Three stages of music featuring food and drinks.

Headliners include Flaming Lips, TV on the Radio, St. Lucia, as well as some amazing DJ's.

Johnny Shockey said they are expecting 25,000 people over the two-day event.

He said he understands San Diegans love the water park, which is why crews are working around the fun areas, to keep them open as long as possible.

Isabell attended the last music festival in March, and supports it 100-percent.

"The kids have this all week long. Give them a few says, it does not hurt," she said.

Carole Helstrom agrees. She said she is glad the county created such a great, fun, free place for her grand-daughter to play.

"I look at it this way - if it wasn't here - they couldn't close it - are you following me? So I look at the positive side and few times they close it - we benefit all the time it's open," she said.

The music festival runs Saturday, from noon to 11 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 10 p.m.

Most of the park will the re-open to the public Monday morning at 6 a.m.

For those inconvenienced, festival organizers said it only happens a couple times a year. Organizers thanked everyone for their understanding.

The county does not know yet how much it will make from the event, but it gets ten percent from all tickets purchased, plus a percentage of concessions sold.
