2 killed, 2 injured in Alpine house fire

Two people were killed in a residential fire in Alpine Saturday.

ALPINE (CNS) - Two people were killed in a residential fire in Alpine Saturday.

At around 1:15 a.m., firefighters and San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies hurried to the fire that broke out in the 700 block of South Grade Road. The home was engulfed in flames, Sgt. Luis Chavez said.

The department's arson unit was called to investigate and found the two burned bodies.

"When they first contacted the two subjects who live at the residence, they were saying that initially there were four occupants inside the residence at the time who were unaccounted for. They weren't sure what happened, so when they did the investigation, they located two bodies inside the residence," Chavez said.

Neighbors say they believe it was a 40-year-old mother and her daughter's 19-year-old boyfriend who died in the fire, while her daughter and husband escaped with serious injuries.

The bodies were given to the Medical Examiner to be identified, Chavez said.

As the community awaits more details, many in the Alpine neighborhood say they're stunned and devastated over the tragedy.

The investigation remains ongoing.
