Secretary of Interior talks fire danger and preps

Posted: Updated:

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - The U.S. Secretary of the Interior was in San Diego on Tuesday to discuss wildfire danger and preparations.

Sally Jewell and Congressman Scott Peters toured the county by air, looking at wildfire-prone areas and were also briefed on current fire conditions.

Jewell said fire seasons are becoming longer, hotter and drier.

In 2015, nine-million acres have burned across the United States.

"We had about 59,000 fires. Roughly equivalent to last year, but we had a lot of really big ones, and some of those were true disasters," said Secretary of Interior, Sally Jewell.

The Obama administration and Congressman Peters are calling for a new funding framework that would treat wildfires similar to other natural disasters.

Currently, the federal government borrows money from fire prevention funds to pay to fight massive wildfires.
