Woman escapes burning home in Poway

POWAY (CBS 8) - An older woman escaped burning flames in her Poway home Tuesday morning, after waking up to the smell of smoke. Firefighters say she's lucky to be alive.

Firefighters say at one point, there was heavy fire blowing out of the windows and attic vents, which spread across the floor. There is massive damage throughout the bedrooms.

Twenty-one firefighters from Poway and San Diego joined forces at the 14000 block of Buckley Street.

Fire crews say they attacked flames from the outside of the house before entering the structure.

"There was a lot of heat and fire all the way to the floor in the bedroom areas of the home," Jon Canavan, Poway Fire Dept. Division Chief said.

When crews arrived on the scene, an older woman ran out. They say she woke up because of a strange odor and smoke that filled the room. She was home alone and was not hurt.

The woman's house could be a total loss and nobody is allowed to go inside for safety reasons.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Firefighters say the resident is getting help from family members, possibly their son, and will be staying with him.
