Sunday fundraiser set to honor slain teen Amber Dubois' birthday

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Just days before what would have been Amber Dubois' 21st birthday, her mother is sharing memories of her daughter.

Carrie McGonigle has worked tirelessly in Amber's memory in the years since the Escondido teen was kidnapped and killed. This coming Sunday marks the day Amber would have turned 21.

“You know, it makes me mad and sad that she isn’t here for her 21st birthday. But instead of being mad and sad, I’m going to celebrate her life,” said Carrie.

Carrie is currently helping plan a fundraiser for this Sunday in Escondido benefiting Team Amber Rescue, the search group she founded, and the charity Helping Paws, created by Mohnacky Animal Hospitals to help San Diego's military families.

"To date, we have been able to perform about 1200 surgeries at no cost to military families," said Craig Mohnacky, president and CEO of Mohnacky Animal Hospitals.

Mohnacky Animal Hospitals is where Carrie's search and rescue dog Amber received life-saving knee surgery several weeks ago, thanks in part to generous donations by CBS News 8 viewers.

Amber the search and rescue dog will also be at Sunday's fundraiser.

"I want to give the public a chance to meet her, a chance to see her work and a chance for me to say thanks," said Carrie.

The Howl-O-Ween fundraiser will be held Sunday, October 25th, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Moose Lodge picnic area in Escondido.

Microchipping and rabies vaccinations will be available for pets at the fundraiser. There will also be an auction of items, including an 8-week-old cavachon puppy.
